The first widely accepted evidence of human presence in the Americas is that of the Clovis culture, named after a site in New Mexico where distinctively shaped stone projectile points were first discovered in 1932. These fluted points, known as Clovis points, were attached to spears and used primarily for hunting megafauna, such as mammoths and mastodons. [Line 5] For decades, the prevailing scientific consensus, known as the 'Clovis First' model, posited that these people were the initial inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere, having crossed the Bering land bridge from Siberia during the last Ice Age around 13,000 years ago.

However, late twentieth-century discoveries began to challenge this timeline. Archaeological sites such as Monte Verde in southern Chile yielded compelling evidence of human occupation dating back at least 1,000 years before the emergence of the Clovis culture. [Line 10] The remarkably well-preserved artifacts at Monte Verde suggested a more complex migration pattern. If humans had reached the southern tip of South America by 14,500 years ago, their ancestors must have entered the continent much earlier, potentially bypassing the inland ice corridors and instead traveling down the Pacific coastline in boats.

[Line 15] This coastal migration theory is now gaining significant traction. It proposes that early mariners navigated along the resource-rich kelp forests of the Pacific coast. While physical evidence of these coastal settlements is scarce—primarily because post-glacial sea-level rise has inundated most ancient shorelines— the linguistic and genetic diversity of Native American populations strongly supports a longer occupation history. [Line 20] Consequently, the Clovis people are now generally viewed not as the first pioneers, but rather as one of several distinct groups that adapted to the dynamic environments of the prehistoric Americas.
