Before the advent of photography in the 19th century, capturing a permanent image of reality relied entirely on the skills of painters and illustrators. This changed dramatically in 1839 when Louis Daguerre introduced the daguerreotype, widely considered the first commercially successful photographic process. [Line 5] A daguerreotype yielded a startlingly detailed image on a highly polished, silver-plated sheet of copper. However, early portraits were notoriously difficult because the process required exposure times of up to several minutes, forcing subjects to remain absolutely still.

The creation of a daguerreotype was a laborious and somewhat hazardous endeavor. [Line 10] The silver surface had to be exposed to iodine vapor to make it light-sensitive, placed inside the camera, and then developed over heated mercury vapor. Despite these technical complexities, daguerreotype studios proliferated across major cities in Europe and the Americas. People were mesmerized by the medium's unprecedented accuracy and realism.

[Line 15] Despite its immense popularity, the daguerreotype possessed a significant inherent limitation: each image was a unique, one-of-a-kind positive. It could not be used as a master copy to print multiple reproductions. In contrast, the calotype process, developed around the same time by William Henry Fox Talbot, utilized paper negatives from which countless positive prints could be made. [Line 20] Although the daguerreotype dominated the early years of photography, the demand for reproducible images eventually rendered the process obsolete by the late 1850s.
